Peace Corps.

For those of you who actually want to do something to make the world a better place, instead of just wishing for it, there are the Peace Corps. Established in 1961, the Peace Corps. serves in over 70 countries around the world. Members are as diverse as the people and countries that they help. A visit to the website can inform you on their history, show you where you may serve and even an application if you’re ready to sign up.

When you arrive at the website you'll notice a colorful and well laid out scheme. Along the left hand side is a varied list of topics that will guide you to the specific information you are looking for. "About the Peace Corps." in addition has many sub headings to narrow your search ever further. In the News category you'll find recent current events and stories from papers, magazines, and TV. One of the more helpful sections is the "Resources for" area where you can click on the category that best defines yourself and therefor will tailor the site to your needs. Under that is the "In the spotlight" where you can learn about recent movements or changes in the Peace Corps. There is also a search bar at the upper right which is useful if you can't find exactly what you're looking for. Finally the site can be viewed in both French and Spanish which makes it easier for volunteers in other areas of the world. It is in depth and offers a great deal of contact information for both possible volunteers and possible donators.

There are also first hand experiences of both members of Peace Corps. and those who have been helped by the organization. Resources for those thinking about joining are also available to aid in your decision making. One of my personal favorites is the section of photo galleries where you can see pictures of the housing you’ll live in, shots of the culture which you may stay, and of the overall environment and scenery.

Recently I had the honor of hearing the West Coast representative of Peace Corps. Travis Axton give a speech on his personal experience and the future of the organization. Travis is a fantastic public speaker that truly understands how to capture an audience. In a class of close to 80 kids, I’ve never witnessed such silence and anticipation of what would be said next. He illustrated his journey from 3 months of training to begin and then 24 months in the “Bush” of Zambia.

He was essentially on his own out there and contact with his friends and family back in the states was few and far between. However, he responded by saying, “Some kids out of college are working at a job, or partying late night, but I’m out in the middle of the bush living in a mud hut and helping those in need.” Travis is a real genuine guy so I really took to heart everything he had to offer, and while he said he couldn’t speak their language fluently he could have fooled me.
