Can’t We All Just Get Along

             Since the dawn of time man has fought his fellow man. The reasons vary from generation to generation, but the fight never ceases to end. Perhaps it is in our human nature, and the winners of such confrontations have lead to our evolution. “Only the strong survive” if you will. Yet with today’s conveniences and the possibility of even the least valuable members of our societies encouraged to succeed and procreate, it has become “Only everybody survives.”  So why is man still fighting?

            We seem to find new reasons for each generation, whether it’s religion, territory, or even terrorism. When two civilizations or cultures clash with another that they find to be different from themselves (which they are because we’re all different) they immediately fear one another. It is human nature to fear the unknown and those who explore and journey into the unknown are the exception rather than the rule; and with good reason. The coming of new peoples onto an already inhabited land tends to end with the new people taking over and killing or enslaving those who were there before them. This stark historical fact has most nations a little uneasy. Amazingly enough, however, we are making progress.

            With the United Nations virtually all of the world’s nations have come together on a unified front and while they might not always agree they hear one another out and try to do what’s in the best interest of the involved countries, as well as the world. There are those countries that don’t attend UN meetings and don’t respect there rules and regulations; which has to be expected with the bold ambitions of such an organization. Also relief aid and global volunteers are increasing relations all across the world and helping millions in need. Unfortunately there are only so many volunteers and a never ending supply of people in need, but at least there are those who make the effort and who do make a difference.

            While I don’t pretend to imagine that we will one day all join hands and sing and dance under a rainbow, I believe that we can always strive to be better. There are always those who oppose such collaboration and there will always be terrorists of one kind or another, but it doesn’t mean that we should give up. And it certainly shouldn’t increase our fear of those we don’t know. If anything it should make us want to reach out and learn more about one another in order to avoid such clashes.
